Lufthansa Opens Hangar One Visitor Center at Frankfurt Airport

Lufthansa Group has officially opened Hangar One, its new visitor and conference center at Frankfurt Airport, welcoming the public from August 1 with an interactive exhibition celebrating 100 years of aviation and Lufthansa history.

Located directly off the A3 motorway at Frankfurt Airport, the 6,000-square-meter venue combines historical exhibits, aviation experiences, meeting facilities and event spaces, offering visitors an insight into the past, present and future of the Lufthansa Group.

Interactive Journey Through 100 Years of Aviation

The permanent exhibition takes visitors through a century of aviation history, highlighting the evolution of Lufthansa and the wider airline industry.

Developed in collaboration with exhibition specialists Atelier Brückner, the experience explores Lufthansa’s airline brands, technical operations, logistics activities and future vision for aviation. Several historical artifacts from the airline’s archives are being displayed publicly for the first time.

The exhibition also addresses one of the most difficult chapters in the company’s history by examining Lufthansa’s role and responsibility during the National Socialist era.

Historic Aircraft Take Center Stage

The centerpiece of Hangar One is two iconic aircraft representing different eras of Lufthansa’s history.

  • Junkers Ju 52 D-AQUI, symbolizing the pioneering years of the original Lufthansa.
  • Lockheed Super Star D-ALAN, representing the airline’s post-war revival during the 1950s.

Visitors will eventually be able to explore the interior of the Lockheed Super Star, with public access expected before the end of the year. The Ju 52 cabin will also open during selected special events.

Opening Day Activities

To celebrate the official opening on August 1, Lufthansa is offering a variety of activities for visitors, including:

  • Special “lucky discounts” at the Worldshop.
  • Photo opportunities with Lufthansa mascot Lu.
  • Flight simulator sessions using the original cockpit of a Diamond DA42 training aircraft (subject to availability).
  • An exclusive screening of the Lufthansa anniversary documentary We are the Journey.

The documentary will become available through Lufthansa’s long-haul inflight entertainment system from September 1.

Family-Friendly Experience

Visitors can access additional exhibition content through QR codes using their own smartphones and headphones. Younger guests can enjoy a dedicated children’s audio guide featuring simplified explanations designed to introduce aviation in an engaging and accessible way.

Café, Shop and Event Facilities

Beyond the exhibition, Hangar One includes the Follow-me Bar, where visitors can relax among aviation-themed surroundings, as well as a retail shop offering exclusive Lufthansa merchandise, collector’s items and products inspired by the Ju 52 and Lockheed Super Star.

The venue also serves as a conference and event center, featuring seven meeting rooms and several multifunctional event spaces suitable for corporate and private functions. From 2027, organizers are expected to be able to rent the restored bar inside the Lockheed Super Star for exclusive events.
