Emirates has unveiled what it describes as a world-first innovation for Economy Class, introducing a new adjustable U-Dream headrest designed to improve passenger comfort on long-haul flights. The airline has already begun installing the headrests across its fleet, with the first aircraft already in service.
Developed in partnership with Safran Seats, the U-Dream headrest provides enhanced support for passengers’ head and neck while sleeping or relaxing. Emirates says it is the first airline in the world to introduce the technology on a large scale in Economy Class.
Designed for Better Sleep
The leather-padded U-Dream headrest features flexible side wings that fold inward to cradle the passenger’s head and neck, helping prevent the head from falling forward or sideways during sleep.
The headrest can also be adjusted vertically and tilted to accommodate passengers of different heights, providing a more personalised seating experience throughout the flight.
The design forms part of Safran Seats’ Z400 Economy seat and has been independently certified to meet European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) safety standards.
Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, said the new headrest represents a significant improvement for Economy Class passengers.
“Emirates never rests on its laurels when it comes to customer experience and we have found a way to significantly improve the comfort for Economy Class passengers, especially those travelling long-haul,” he said. “The U-Dream changes the game if the person wants to sleep by supporting the neck in full. No more neck pillows needed.”
Fleet Rollout Underway
The U-Dream headrest is currently available on Emirates’ first three Airbus A350 aircraft already in service.
The airline plans to equip its entire Airbus A350 fleet with the new headrests by the end of 2026. They will also come factory-installed on all 270 Boeing 777X aircraft ordered by Emirates.
Beginning in 2027, the airline will also retrofit the U-Dream headrests across most of its Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 fleet as part of its ongoing cabin modernisation programme.
Part of a Broader Economy Class Investment
The headrest forms part of Emirates’ wider investment in enhancing the Economy Class experience. The airline’s latest Airbus A350 cabins feature 3-3-3 seating, 13.3-inch 4K entertainment screens, USB-C charging ports and improved cabin design aimed at increasing passenger comfort on long-haul routes.
Passengers also have access to Emirates’ award-winning ice entertainment system with more than 6,500 channels of movies, television programmes, music, podcasts and live sport.
Emirates is also continuing the rollout of Starlink high-speed satellite internet across its fleet, allowing passengers to browse, stream and work during their flights. According to the airline, customers have already made more than one million Starlink connections onboard.
Continuing Focus on Passenger Experience
Beyond seating improvements, Emirates continues to invest in complimentary meals, multilingual cabin crew, family-friendly amenities and its Skywards loyalty programme as part of its strategy to enhance the customer experience across all cabin classes.
With the introduction of the U-Dream headrest, Emirates is further strengthening its focus on improving long-haul comfort for Economy Class travellers while continuing one of the aviation industry’s largest fleet renewal and cabin upgrade programmes.
