United Airlines Unveils Economy Plus Seats with Extra Elbow Room

United Airlines has unveiled a new Economy Plus seating concept for its upcoming Airbus A321XLR fleet, introducing extra elbow room through an innovative cabin layout that replaces the middle seat with a shared table.

The new design is intended to provide additional personal space for travelers on international flights while enhancing the premium economy experience beyond traditional extra legroom.

Middle Seat Replaced by Shared Space

One row on each Airbus A321XLR will feature a permanently installed center console instead of a standard middle seat.

The fixed table includes a soft leather-like surface and integrated cup holders, creating a shared space for passengers seated by the window and aisle. The configuration offers increased elbow room in addition to the three inches of extra legroom already included with Economy Plus seating.

United plans to install the new seating arrangement on all 50 Airbus A321XLR aircraft currently on order and is evaluating the concept for other aircraft types in its fleet.

Premium Features Throughout the Cabin

The Airbus A321XLR will feature 32 United Polaris business class suites with direct aisle access and lie-flat seats, reflecting the airline’s focus on premium long-haul travel.

Every seat on board will also be equipped with a large 4K OLED entertainment screen, providing an upgraded inflight entertainment experience across all cabin classes.

A321XLR Service Begins in 2026

United expects to begin operating domestic flights with the Airbus A321XLR in autumn 2026 before deploying the aircraft on international routes.

The long-range narrowbody aircraft will allow the airline to serve transatlantic and other long-haul destinations more efficiently while offering passengers a modern cabin with updated seating and onboard amenities.

Expanding Customer Choice

According to United, the new Economy Plus concept is part of the airline’s broader investment in upgrading its fleet across every cabin.

By combining additional personal space with premium seating options such as Polaris suites, United aims to provide travelers with more comfort and greater choice regardless of the cabin they select.
