United Airlines will introduce a new Economy Plus seating option later this year, featuring a blocked middle seat designed to provide passengers with additional personal space on its new Airbus A321XLR aircraft.
The new configuration will be available exclusively on the airline’s A321XLR fleet and will initially consist of one dedicated row within the Economy Plus cabin.
Extra Space Without Upgrading to Premium Cabins
Instead of a third passenger seat, the middle position will feature a fixed shared table extending between the aisle and window seats. The table will include integrated cup holders, giving passengers extra elbow room while maintaining the additional legroom already included with Economy Plus seating.
United said the seats will be sold as a premium option for an additional fee, with pricing and the official launch date to be announced later this year.
Part of the New Airbus A321XLR Experience
The airline expects to receive its first Airbus A321XLR aircraft this autumn. The aircraft will initially operate on domestic routes before being introduced on short- and medium-haul international services from early 2027.
In addition to the new Economy Plus seating option, the aircraft will feature United Polaris business-class suites with privacy doors, Premium Plus premium economy, 4K OLED entertainment screens with Bluetooth connectivity at every seat, larger overhead luggage bins and a self-service snack station in the rear economy cabin.
Six Cabin Options on One Aircraft
With the addition of the blocked-middle row, United’s A321XLR will offer six seating choices: Polaris business class, Premium Plus, the new Economy Plus Extra Space row, standard Economy Plus, Preferred Seating and United Economy.
The concept resembles business-class seating commonly found on many European short-haul airlines, where the middle seat is left vacant to provide additional comfort. In the United States, however, the approach remains relatively uncommon. Frontier Airlines introduced a similar blocked-middle product, UpFront Plus, in 2024.
Fleet Investment Continues
United has ordered 50 Airbus A321XLR aircraft, all of which are expected to be delivered with the new seating configuration already installed. The airline has also indicated it is evaluating whether the concept could be expanded to other aircraft types in the future.
The announcement forms part of a broader investment in the passenger experience, with United also preparing to introduce upgraded business-class seats, lie-flat seating concepts and new fare options across its network.
