Chopin Airport Starts CT Scanners for Hand Baggage Checks

Warsaw Chopin Airport has started using new CT scanners for hand baggage checks in one of its biggest security upgrades to date. The change is designed to shorten screening times, increase capacity and improve passenger comfort.

The new system is not yet available to all travellers. At first, only two Fast Track security lanes are using the CT scanners.

The airport said the modernisation marks one of the largest changes to its security zone in the history of the Polish capital’s main airport. The move puts Chopin Airport among a growing number of European hubs investing in computed tomography technology to improve the passenger flow through security checkpoints.

CT scanners create detailed 3D images of cabin bags, allowing security staff to inspect contents more precisely without removing as many items at the checkpoint. Airports have increasingly adopted the technology because it can help speed up screening while also improving detection capabilities.

For passengers, the most visible change is expected to be a faster and smoother security process. The airport said the new equipment should reduce the time needed for departure formalities, which is especially important at busy periods when queues can build quickly.

At present, however, the upgrade is limited to the Fast Track area. That means most passengers will continue to use the existing security lanes for now, with wider access to the new scanners likely to follow later as the installation expands.

Chopin Airport is the main international gateway for Warsaw and one of the busiest airports in Central Europe. Security and terminal upgrades have become a key part of its efforts to handle growing passenger numbers and improve the overall travel experience.

The introduction of CT scanners comes amid a broader push by airports worldwide to modernise border and security checks. Many hubs are replacing older X-ray systems with more advanced technology in an effort to manage demand and cut friction at security control.

For now, the change is gradual. But the airport’s first step into CT-based hand baggage screening signals a significant shift in how passengers may move through one of Poland’s most important travel hubs.
