Warsaw Chopin Airport temporarily closed runway 1 after cracks appeared on the surface, forcing aircraft to use a second runway and causing delays to some flights. The disruption affected operations on 28 June, according to the source text.
The airport said traffic continued on runway 3, which operates as RWY 15/33, while runway 1, marked RWY 29/11 and used on the Ursynow-Ursus direction, was shut for safety reasons. The closure was temporary.
Flight schedules were affected, but the airport kept running by redirecting take-offs and landings to the alternative runway. The source did not say how many flights were delayed or how long the closure lasted.
Runway closures are among the most disruptive events for airports because they can reduce capacity quickly, especially at busy hubs. Even a short suspension can create knock-on delays across an entire network, with aircraft and crews arriving out of sequence.
Warsaw Chopin Airport is Poland’s busiest airport and one of the main gateways for international travel in central and eastern Europe. It serves both short-haul and long-haul routes, making any runway issue potentially significant for airlines and passengers.
