Moscow Airports Suspend Flights As Ukraine Launches New Drone Attack

All four of Moscow’s major airports temporarily suspended flights on Monday morning after Russian authorities reported a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack targeting the capital.

The disruption came just days after Moscow experienced what officials described as the largest drone assault on the city since the start of the war.

Airports Suspend Operations

Flight operations were temporarily halted at Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports as authorities implemented safety measures during the attack.

Russia’s civil aviation agency said the restrictions were introduced to ensure flight safety while air defense systems responded to incoming drones.

Operations resumed later in the morning after the immediate threat had passed.

Dozens Of Drones Target Moscow

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said reports of drones approaching the capital began around 3 a.m. local time.

By 10 a.m., he stated that Russian air defenses had intercepted a total of 80 Ukrainian drones around Moscow.

Emergency services were dispatched to several locations where drone debris reportedly fell following interceptions.

Officials said there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

More Than 300 Drones Intercepted Nationwide

Russia’s Defense Ministry said a total of 301 Ukrainian drones were intercepted across Russia and the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula between Sunday night and Monday morning.

The latest wave of attacks highlights Ukraine’s continued efforts to strike targets deep inside Russian territory using long-range drones.

Attack Follows Strike On Moscow Refinery

The overnight operation came only days after Ukrainian forces reportedly targeted a major oil refinery in the Moscow region.

The facility is considered strategically important because it supplies a significant portion of the fuel consumed in Moscow and surrounding areas.

Ukraine has increasingly focused on energy infrastructure, military facilities and logistics hubs as part of its broader strategy to disrupt Russian operations and resources.

Growing Impact On Air Travel

Drone attacks have repeatedly disrupted aviation operations across Russia in recent months, forcing temporary airport closures and causing delays for thousands of passengers.

While most flights resumed after the restrictions were lifted, the incident once again demonstrated how the conflict is increasingly affecting transportation infrastructure far from the front lines.

The full extent of any damage from the latest attack remains unclear as authorities continue assessing the affected areas.
