California Offers Free State Parks Passes To Residents For Historic Sites

California residents can now visit dozens of historic state parks free of charge after Governor Gavin Newsom announced a special statewide initiative tied to Juneteenth and the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

The program offers a complimentary version of California State Parks’ Historian Passport, which typically costs $50. The pass provides free admission for up to four people at more than 30 participating historic state parks across the state.

Officials say the initiative is designed to encourage residents to explore California’s rich cultural and historical heritage while making historic sites more accessible to families and communities.

Free Passes Available For A Limited Time

California residents can claim the free Historian Passport between June 16 and July 6.

Once obtained, the pass grants access to participating historic state parks for the remainder of the year, allowing visitors to discover important landmarks, museums and preserved historic sites throughout California.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to commemorate Juneteenth and the nation’s approaching 250th anniversary celebrations.

Access To More Than 30 Historic Parks

The Historian Passport covers admission to more than 30 historic state parks located across California.

These sites showcase a wide range of the state’s history, including Gold Rush heritage, Native American culture, Spanish and Mexican-era landmarks, military sites and locations connected to California’s early development.

The program gives residents an affordable way to explore destinations that highlight the diverse stories and people who helped shape the state.

Encouraging Heritage Tourism And Education

California State Parks hopes the initiative will inspire more residents to visit cultural and historical attractions that they may not have previously explored.

By removing admission costs, officials aim to increase participation in educational and heritage-focused travel while encouraging families to spend time learning about California’s history firsthand.

The pass can be used for day visits and provides an opportunity to experience some of the state’s most significant historical locations without additional entrance fees.

Part Of National Anniversary Celebrations

The free-pass initiative also aligns with preparations for the 250th anniversary of the United States, which will be commemorated in 2026 through events and educational programs nationwide.

California’s historic parks are expected to play an important role in those celebrations by highlighting the state’s unique contribution to American history.

Residents interested in taking advantage of the offer are encouraged to claim their Historian Passport before the July 6 deadline and begin planning visits to some of California’s most important historic destinations.
