Thai Airways Considers Returning to Russia With Direct Flights by 2027

Thai Airways is considering a return to the Russian market, with direct flights between Thailand and Russia potentially resuming by 2027 as the airline evaluates expansion opportunities amid strong travel demand.

The announcement comes as Thailand continues to welcome record numbers of Russian tourists, reinforcing Russia’s position as the country’s largest tourism market in Europe.

Thai Airways Evaluates Return to Russia

According to Suladda Sarutilavan, Executive Director for Europe at the Tourism Authority of Thailand, discussions have taken place with representatives of Thai Airways regarding the possibility of restoring direct air services to Russian cities.

She noted that the airline is interested in returning to the market but is currently facing aircraft availability challenges.

“I discussed this issue with representatives of Thai Airways. They said they are considering resuming direct flights to cities in Russia, but the airline is experiencing a shortage of aircraft and is still awaiting the delivery of new planes,” Sarutilavan said.

She added that direct services operated by Thai Airways could potentially return by 2027.

Flights Suspended Since 2020

Thai Airways suspended all direct flights to Russia in March 2020 following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread closure of international borders.

Prior to the suspension, the carrier operated regular services connecting Bangkok with major Russian destinations, serving both leisure travellers and business passengers.

The possible resumption of flights would mark the airline’s return to one of Thailand’s most important long-haul tourism markets.

Russian Tourism Continues to Grow

The renewed interest in restoring direct flights comes as Russian visitor numbers continue to climb.

According to Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports, approximately 1.9 million Russian tourists visited the country in 2025, setting a new all-time record and making Russia the fourth-largest source market overall.

Russia remains Thailand’s largest tourism market in Europe, providing a significant contribution to the country’s tourism sector.

The growth has continued into 2026. More than 950,000 Russian travellers have already visited Thailand since the beginning of the year, putting the market on track for another strong performance.

Potential Boost for Connectivity

The return of Thai Airways would further strengthen air links between the two countries, complementing services currently operated by Russian carriers and providing travellers with additional options between Thailand and key Russian cities.

For Thailand’s tourism industry, improved connectivity would support continued growth from one of its most resilient international visitor markets, while offering Russian travellers greater access to popular destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya and Krabi.

Although no formal launch date has been announced, the prospect of Thai Airways returning to Russia reflects the airline’s confidence in long-term demand and the strategic importance of the Russian market to Thailand’s tourism economy.
