Saudi Arabia Plans Massive Cooling Project To Lower Riyadh Temperatures By 15 Degrees

Saudi Arabia is preparing an ambitious urban cooling project designed to reduce temperatures across Riyadh by as much as 15 degrees Celsius as authorities attempt to tackle rising heat and improve outdoor conditions in one of the world’s fastest-growing cities.

The initiative, known as the Riyadh Strategic Cooling Project, forms part of wider efforts to combat the urban heat island effect created by dense concentrations of concrete, asphalt and glass that trap heat long after sunset.

The project is expected to become one of the largest climate adaptation programmes currently planned for a major city in the Middle East.

Project Targets Urban Heat Through Multiple Solutions

Officials are evaluating a combination of environmental and engineering measures designed to reduce heat absorption and improve outdoor comfort.

Plans include expanding green areas, increasing shaded pedestrian spaces and introducing materials that reflect rather than absorb solar heat.

Authorities are also exploring new road surfaces capable of remaining cooler during periods of extreme temperatures.

The project aims to create a more comfortable environment for both residents and visitors as Riyadh continues rapid expansion.

Water Features And Cooling Technologies Planned

Additional measures being considered include open water canals and artificial ponds that use evaporation to naturally cool surrounding areas.

Advanced cooling technologies are also expected to form part of the wider strategy as planners search for scalable solutions suitable for large urban environments.

Urban cooling projects have become increasingly important across regions experiencing rising temperatures and expanding city populations.

Reducing outdoor temperatures may also decrease demand for air conditioning and lower energy consumption across parts of the city.

Project Supports Wider Vision For Riyadh’s Expansion

The initiative aligns with broader national development strategies focused on improving sustainability and urban livability as Saudi Arabia invests heavily in infrastructure and mega projects.

Authorities plan to begin by testing technologies across five pilot zones before considering wider implementation throughout the city.

Detailed studies and final approvals remain ongoing, and officials have not yet disclosed the total project cost.

The project highlights how cities facing increasingly extreme temperatures are exploring large-scale climate adaptation measures as part of long-term urban planning.
