Spain Approves 100 Million Euro Palma Airport Control Centre Move

The Spanish government has approved plans for a new air traffic control centre serving the Balearic Islands, with the facility set to be relocated from Palma Airport to the nearby Son Bonet aerodrome in Marratxí.

The project was approved by Spain’s Council of Ministers and carries an estimated investment value of €81.4 million excluding VAT.

ENAIRE Authorised To Begin Tender Process

Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has authorised ENAIRE, the country’s state-owned air navigation operator, to launch the tender process for the development.

The project includes relocating the headquarters of the Balearic Regional Air Navigation Directorate alongside the construction of a new Air Traffic Control Centre at Son Bonet.

Officials said the construction contract will be offered through an open public tender process.

Construction Scheduled Over 32 Months

The new facility is expected to require approximately 32 months to complete once construction officially begins.

After completion, the new centre will assume operations currently handled at Palma de Mallorca Airport.

The relocation forms part of wider efforts to modernise aviation infrastructure across the Balearic Islands as air traffic volumes continue growing.

Palma Airport Expansion Continues

Authorities said moving air traffic operations away from Palma Airport will free additional space for refurbishment and expansion works currently underway at the airport.

Airport operator Aena is carrying out a large-scale redevelopment programme aimed at improving passenger facilities, operational efficiency and future airport capacity.

Palma Airport remains one of Spain’s busiest aviation gateways, particularly during the peak summer tourism season.

Balearic Islands Remain Major Tourism Market

The Balearic Islands continue ranking among Spain’s most important tourism destinations, attracting millions of international visitors each year.

Strong passenger growth, increasing airline capacity and rising seasonal demand have placed growing pressure on regional aviation infrastructure in recent years.

Authorities say the new air traffic control centre will support long-term operational resilience and help modernise air navigation systems serving the islands.

Spain Continues Investing In Aviation Infrastructure

The Balearic project reflects broader investment trends across Spain’s aviation sector as airports and air navigation systems continue expanding to support tourism growth and rising passenger demand.

Infrastructure upgrades remain a key priority as Spain strengthens its position as one of Europe’s largest air travel and tourism markets.
