Pope Leo XIV is set to visit Spain in June for a multi-day trip that will include meetings with political leaders, religious figures and young people, alongside a historic visit to Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia.
The Vatican confirmed that the Pope will arrive in Madrid on June 6, where he will be officially welcomed by King Felipe VI at the Royal Palace.
During his first day in the Spanish capital, Pope Leo XIV will also meet government authorities, members of civil society and representatives of the diplomatic corps.
Later that evening, he is expected to lead a prayer vigil with young people in Plaza de Lima in central Madrid.
Corpus Christi Celebrations Planned In Madrid
On June 7, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Pope will celebrate Mass in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles, one of the city’s most iconic public spaces.
He will also meet privately with members of the Order of Saint Augustine before attending a gathering with representatives from the worlds of culture, business, sport and the arts at the Movistar Arena.
The following day, Pope Leo XIV will hold talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez before addressing members of parliament at the Congress of Deputies.
He is also scheduled to meet bishops at the headquarters of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference.
The Madrid portion of the visit will conclude with an evening gathering involving the local diocesan community at the Bernabéu Stadium.
Sagrada Familia Ceremony To Mark Major Moment Of Visit
On June 9, the Pope will travel to Barcelona for one of the most anticipated moments of the trip – the inauguration and blessing of the Tower of Jesus Christ at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia.
The tower, which is the tallest structure within the basilica, crowns the internationally recognised landmark church originally designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí.
The Sagrada Familia was consecrated 16 years ago by Pope Benedict XVI and is often described as a “Bible in stone” because of its intricate religious symbolism and architecture.
The papal visit also coincides with commemorations marking the centenary of Gaudí’s death.
Spain Prepares For High-Profile Papal Visit
The visit is expected to draw large crowds to both Madrid and Barcelona, with significant security and logistical preparations already underway.
Pope Leo XIV’s trip will be one of the most important religious and public events hosted in Spain this year, combining major Catholic celebrations with political, cultural and social engagements across the country.
