Renfe Maintains Normal Operations Despite Limited Strike Action

Renfe has reported minimal disruption across its rail network following strike action called by the Sindicato Ferroviario, with the Spanish rail operator saying services have continued to run largely as scheduled.

According to data collected by 11:00 a.m., participation in the morning shift stood at 1.59%, while no Renfe Group employees joined the strike during the overnight shift. The company described the impact on operations as “minimal,” with traffic proceeding normally across most of the network.

High-Speed Services Operating Normally

Renfe said all commercial train services, including AVE, Avlo, Alvia, Euromed and Intercity, have operated without cancellations. The company confirmed that none of the scheduled long-distance trains were withdrawn due to the strike.

The only reported incident involved an AVE service between Barcelona and Madrid scheduled to depart at 11:00 a.m. The issue was resolved by coupling the train with another AVE service operating on the same route, allowing passengers to continue their journey without cancellations.

Limited Impact on Commuter Services

Public service operations, including Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia services, experienced limited disruption. As of 9:00 a.m., approximately 4.5% of these services had been affected by the strike.

In Madrid, Renfe reported no disruption to Cercanías services, with strike participation recorded at 0%. In Catalonia, Rodalies services experienced a greater impact, with approximately 5.85% of operations affected.

Low Participation Across Renfe Group

By business unit, participation during the morning shift reached 0.7% at Renfe Viajeros, 4.1% at Renfe Ingeniería y Mantenimiento and 0% at Renfe Mercancías.

Renfe stressed that it had not proactively canceled services, noting that only a very small number of trains operating outside the government-mandated minimum service levels had been affected.

The company also emphasized that minimum service requirements established by Spain’s Ministry of Transport are legally protected and cannot be suspended during strike action. Renfe said it will continue providing updates throughout the day as additional operational data becomes available.
