French Waterways has unveiled a new high-end itinerary for 2026 that reimagines travel along the Canal du Midi, combining traditional barge cruising with vintage car drives and helicopter excursions.
The six-night experience aboard the hotel barge Savannah blends slow travel with immersive, high-touch experiences both on land and in the air, reflecting growing demand for experiential luxury travel.
Guests will explore the Languedoc region through a series of curated excursions, including drives in classic Citroën 2CV vehicles, offering a nostalgic way to navigate the countryside. Aerial tours by helicopter provide sweeping views of landmarks such as the fortified city of Carcassonne, the Château de Quéribus and the Château de Peyrepertuse, as well as the canal itself and surrounding landscapes.
On land, the itinerary includes privately guided visits to historic destinations such as Minerve, Narbonne and Mirepoix, alongside a stop at the 17th-century Château de Pennautier. Wine-focused experiences are also central, with private tastings in the Minervois region and visits to local markets.
Aboard Savannah, guests are offered a fully catered experience, including gourmet meals prepared by a private chef, as well as leisure time on the sun deck and spa pool. The voyage runs between La Redorte and Bram, two key stretches of the canal known for their historic locks, aqueducts and vineyard-lined scenery.
All-inclusive charters are available from May through October, starting at $32,000 for four guests, with transfers included from Narbonne or Carcassonne. The itinerary can also be tailored for private groups, emphasizing flexibility as part of the luxury offering.
For smaller parties, French Waterways is also offering similar experiences aboard its sister vessel Amour, designed for couples seeking a more intimate version of the journey.
As demand grows for personalised, experience-led travel, the Canal du Midi programme highlights how operators are evolving traditional cruising into multi-sensory journeys that combine heritage, gastronomy and exclusive access.
