Thackray House Reopens In Scotland After £3m Refurbishment

Thackray House in Scotland has reopened following a £3 million refurbishment, marking a new chapter for the historic property formerly known as the Roman Camp Hotel.

Located in Callander on the banks of the River Teith, the hotel dates back to 1625, when it originally served as a hunting lodge for the Dukes of Perth. The relaunch follows its acquisition last year by entrepreneur Gail Thackray, with Inverlochy Castle Management International appointed to oversee the transformation.

Historic Property Restored With Modern Comfort

The refurbishment has focused on preserving the building’s heritage while upgrading it for contemporary hospitality. Original features including a wood-panelled library, carved ceilings, an oval ballroom and 1920s Art Deco lampshades have been carefully restored.

Set within 20 acres of land, the estate includes 17 bedrooms, a private chapel, riverside gardens and the Drummond Suite, an oval event space capable of hosting up to 150 guests. The property also benefits from its own fishing rights along the river.

New Dining Concept Inspired By Musical Legacy

In a nod to the hotel’s past, the new Strawberry Fields Bistro has been introduced within the grounds. The property gained recognition in the 1960s for hosting The Beatles during their early tours, a legacy reflected in the bistro’s name and the themed John Lennon Suite.

Led by head chef Martyn Shearer, the restaurant focuses on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and is open to both hotel guests and the local community.

New Management And Community Focus

The relaunch has been led by Inverlochy Castle Management International, with Norbert Lieder highlighting the importance of balancing heritage with guest comfort.

Joanna Nelson has been appointed general manager, bringing experience within the group and a focus on positioning the hotel as both a destination for visitors and a hub for the local community.

A New Chapter For A Scottish Landmark

With its combination of historic character, updated interiors and new dining experiences, Thackray House aims to attract both leisure travellers and local visitors.

The reopening reflects a broader trend of heritage properties being revitalised to meet modern expectations, while maintaining the unique stories and identity that define them.
