Qatar Reopens Doha Airport to Foreign Airlines Amid Ongoing Tensions

Qatar Civil Aviation Authority has authorised a phased reopening of Hamad International Airport to foreign airlines, marking a cautious step toward restoring international connectivity through Doha after weeks of regional disruption.

Under a newly issued Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), foreign carriers are now permitted to resume operations into Qatar, although flights require prior approval and must comply with enhanced safety and security procedures. The move expands access beyond the limited services previously operated solely by Qatar Airways.

The airport had been operating under strict limitations since escalating hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran forced tighter control of Gulf airspace. During that period, Qatar Airways remained the only airline maintaining essential operations, including repatriation and special-authorisation flights.

In its April 20 statement, the aviation authority said the decision followed a comprehensive assessment conducted in coordination with national entities, with safety and operational readiness as the top priorities. Officials emphasized that all resumed flights will adhere to internationally recognised safety standards, with additional precautions in place to protect passengers and aviation personnel.

Despite the reopening, conditions remain far from normal. Regional airspace continues to be constrained, with aviation routes heavily restricted. Prior to the latest announcement, much of the Middle East operated under what industry groups described as a “central corridor shutdown,” forcing airlines to reroute flights through limited alternatives such as the northern Caucasus corridor or the southern Arabian Sea.

Even now, access to Gulf airspace and major hubs remains tightly controlled, and the reopening does not remove broader operational limitations. Foreign airlines will be required to operate within the same restricted framework currently governing flights in and out of Qatar.

Recent data highlights the continued dominance of Qatar Airways during the disruption. Over the past week, Hamad International Airport has handled 1,917 aircraft movements, connecting 115 destinations across 63 countries. Key routes included Doha to London Heathrow, Hong Kong and Riyadh, reflecting the airline’s role in maintaining critical global links.

The timing of the reopening also introduces uncertainty. A fragile ceasefire in the Iran-related conflict is nearing expiration, raising concerns that the window for resumed international operations could be short-lived if tensions escalate again.

For now, the phased reopening offers cautious optimism for airlines and travelers, but the situation remains fluid, with Qatar’s aviation sector operating under heightened vigilance and ongoing geopolitical risk.
