Ethiopia has begun implementing an ambitious project – the construction of Bishoftu International Airport, which is intended to relieve pressure on the existing Bole International Airport. The new hub is located approximately 40 km southwest of Addis Ababa.
The work will be carried out in phases, allowing the infrastructure to expand in line with demand and operational requirements. The first phase, valued at around USD 12.5 billion, is planned for completion by 2030. At that stage, the airport will be able to handle up to 60 million passengers per year. Once fully completed, the facility will accommodate up to 110 million travellers annually, making it the largest aviation hub in Africa.
“The development of Bishoftu International Airport will be a historic breakthrough in the advancement of African aviation. It will significantly expand opportunities for trade, tourism and business on the continent and beyond,” said Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines.
The project was initiated by Ethiopian Airlines Group (EAG), with financing to be provided by the African Development Bank. Consulting services will be delivered by Dar Al-Handasah Consultants and KPMG.
So far, the project has passed several key preparation stages: EAG has presented an information memorandum to potential investors, while contractors for design and procurement have also been shortlisted.
