Air Europa Enters a New Era as CEO Steps Down after Turkish Airlines Investment

Turkish Airlines’ acquisition of Air Europa is beginning to show its first visible effects, and the shift comes with a symbolic moment at the top. After nearly two and a half years leading the airline, Jesús Nuño de la Rosa has announced his departure as CEO, stepping aside following what both sides describe as a cordial agreement reached directly with Chairman Juan José Hidalgo. The company highlighted that the decision was made “in an atmosphere of friendship and utmost cordiality” and formally approved by the board.

For an airline accustomed to navigating turbulence, the tone matters. Air Europa is still largely a family-owned Spanish company, and in its statement it expressed gratitude for Nuño de la Rosa’s “commitment, dedication, and loyalty.” His successor will be named in the coming days, opening a new chapter at a time when the company is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in its history.

The timing is not random. Just under two weeks ago, Air Europa completed an agreement that brought Turkish Airlines in as a strategic investor. The Turkish carrier injected €300 million into the Spanish airline after both Lufthansa and IAG opted not to move forward with a stake. The fresh capital adds to the €475 million of public financing granted during the pandemic, a package from SEPI whose repayment deadline was recently brought forward by a year. With the repayment clock ticking faster, the new investment arrives as both relief and reset.

The CEO’s exit also coincides with another quiet but meaningful change: the departure of SEPI’s representatives on the board of directors, César Hernández Blanco and Juan Manuel Bujía. Air Europa framed this as a natural consequence of the company’s new context, one where state oversight gives way to a more commercially driven stage.

For travelers and industry watchers, these shifts hint at a broader transformation. Turkish Airlines is known for its ambition and rapid global expansion, and its arrival in Air Europa brings expectations of renewed strategy, sharper competition, and potential growth across Latin America and European routes. Leadership changes are often the first signals of deeper realignment, and this moment feels like exactly that.

As Air Europa prepares to introduce its next CEO, all eyes will be on how the airline balances its Spanish identity with the influence of a powerful international partner. The transition may only just be beginning, but the direction is already clear: a new era is taking off.
