Wizz Air has announced an ambitious plan to train 1,200 new pilots by 2028, with 240 of them based in the UK. The initiative reinforces the airline’s long-term investment in the UK economy and its commitment to continued growth across Europe.
In a move designed to attract fresh talent into the aviation industry, Wizz Air is inviting applications not only from aspiring aviators but also from individuals looking to change careers. The airline’s fully funded pilot training programme removes the financial barrier often associated with flight training, offering an accessible route into one of Europe’s fastest-growing carriers.
The selection process takes around six months, followed by two years of intensive training before candidates qualify as Wizz Air pilots. Once onboard, pay starts at £40,000 during training, increasing to £60,000 upon completion, and rising further to between £145,000 and £200,000 for those promoted to Captain.
“With more than 250 pilots already based in the UK and 2,800 across the wider Wizz Air Group, this programme highlights our continued investment in building a highly skilled workforce to support our growing fleet and expanding route network,” the airline said.
As part of its recruitment campaign, Wizz Air will participate in Pilot Careers Live in Dublin on 18 October and London on 1 November, giving potential applicants the chance to meet the team, learn more about the training process, and explore future career opportunities.
Captain Phil Cullen, Wizz Air UK’s Head of Operations and Accountable Manager, described the initiative as a major investment in both the aviation sector and the UK’s economic future.
“Our commitment to training 1,200 new pilots by 2028 represents a significant step forward for Wizz Air and for the industry,” he said. “We’re particularly excited to expand our recruitment into Ireland for the first time and to open the door to people considering a career change. Wizz Air is proud to offer clear progression and industry-leading support to all our pilots—from training through to Captain.”
With this announcement, Wizz Air continues to strengthen its position as one of Europe’s leading low-cost airlines, ensuring a new generation of pilots is ready to take to the skies as the airline’s network and fleet continue to expand.
