Free Drinking Water Fountains to Be Installed at Novosibirsk’s Tolmachevo Airport

Novosibirsk’s Tolmachevo Airport, the largest aviation hub east of the Ural Mountains, has begun installing free drinking water fountains following repeated complaints about overpriced bottled water. The initiative comes after Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) raised concerns over excessive retail markups at airport shops.

According to TASS, the airport’s press service confirmed that installation work is already underway, with the fountains expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.

Passengers had long voiced frustration over the cost of bottled water in Tolmachevo’s retail zones, with local media reporting wide price variations depending on the location. A small bottle could cost between 60–70 rubles in public areas and up to 460–560 rubles in secure zones and baggage claim areas.

The issue attracted the attention of regulators earlier this year. In June 2025, the FAS launched an investigation into airport retail pricing, pledging to pay particular attention to the cost of bottled water sold in transportation security zones.

A similar review conducted in 2021 led several food service operators at Russian airports to lower prices and expand their range of affordable water options — some items were introduced at 43–47% below previous retail levels.

Airport officials said the new water fountains are part of a broader effort to improve passenger comfort and align with international standards that prioritize accessibility to drinking water in transport hubs.
