American Airlines Bets Big on Zero-Emission Future with ZeroAvia Hydrogen-Electric Engine Deal

American Airlines has announced a conditional purchase agreement for 100 hydrogen-electric engines from clean aviation leader ZeroAvia, designed to power regional jets with zero in-flight emissions – save for water vapor. The deal signals one of the strongest commitments yet by a major airline to alternative propulsion and aligns with American’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The agreement builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2022, and coincides with American’s increased investment in ZeroAvia through participation in the company’s Series C funding round.

A New Era of Clean Regional Aviation

ZeroAvia is at the forefront of developing hydrogen-electric propulsion systems, which generate electricity from hydrogen fuel cells to power electric motors—producing only water vapor as a by-product. The company is currently flight-testing a 20-seat prototype and is actively designing a larger engine for aircraft such as the Bombardier CRJ700, a model used by American on select regional routes.

“This announcement will help accelerate the development of technologies needed to power our industry and uphold our commitment to make American a sustainable airline,” said Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines. “Advancing the transition of commercial aviation to a low-carbon future requires investments in promising technologies, including alternate forms of propulsion.”

Investing in a Greener Flight Path

American Airlines’ move is more than symbolic. It represents a growing industry shift toward clean propulsion technologies and long-term decarbonization. The airline, which has already completed the most extensive fleet renewal in commercial aviation history, now operates the youngest mainline fleet among major U.S. carriers. These modern aircraft are more fuel-efficient, and this latest step takes sustainability to the next frontier.

In addition to working with ZeroAvia, American has forged other sustainability-first partnerships, including a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) offtake agreement with Infinium and becoming the first customer of Graphyte’s permanent carbon removal process.

ZeroAvia’s Vision: Clean Propulsion Within Reach

“This agreement and further investment from American support our mission of innovation for clean aircraft propulsion,” said ZeroAvia CEO Val Miftakhov. “It’s a strong signal that ZeroAvia is delivering on our technology roadmap.”

Hydrogen-electric propulsion offers a dual advantage: nearly zero emissions and the potential for reduced operating costs, thanks to its simpler, less thermally intense electrical systems. As airlines grapple with rising fuel prices and climate commitments, these engines could become a cornerstone of sustainable regional aviation.

What’s Next?

While certification and widespread deployment are still on the horizon, American’s 100-engine commitment marks a pivotal moment for zero-emission flight. It demonstrates growing confidence in hydrogen technology as a realistic and scalable solution for commercial aviation – especially on regional routes where range and infrastructure are more manageable.

The skies of tomorrow may look very different — and thanks to partnerships like this, they may be cleaner, quieter, and significantly more sustainable.
