North Korea is set to reopen its borders to foreign tourists for the first time in nearly five years, beginning in December. The city of Samjiyon, located in the mountainous northern region, will be the first destination open to international visitors, according to BBC.

The country closed its borders in early 2020 at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and has only recently begun to ease restrictions. Until now, entry has been limited to Russian tourists, reflecting the strengthening ties between North Korea and Russia.

Samjiyon, situated at the foot of Mount Paektu, North Korea’s tallest peak that straddles the border with China, is a popular winter destination. Known for its scenic beauty and winter sports attractions, the city has been undergoing significant redevelopment in recent years. According to state media, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has revealed plans to modernize the area, including rebuilding Samjiyon’s airport, converting a military ski base into a resort, and constructing new railways and hotels to accommodate foreign tourists.
