German authorities are investigating how a man suspected of carrying out a deadly vehicle attack near Berlin’s Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrations was able to reach a crowded area despite extensive security measures.
More than 2,200 police officers were deployed to secure the annual Pride event, while over 200 mobile anti-ram barriers were installed throughout central Berlin. However, investigators say the suspect, identified by German media as Abdul Ballut, drove a white van into Tiergarten park before deliberately steering the vehicle toward pedestrians.
One woman was killed in the attack and 29 others were injured, according to authorities.
Attack Occurred Outside Main Security Zone
Police are examining how the vehicle gained access to Tiergarten, where the attack took place. Officials said the location was outside the main protected area of the Christopher Street Day event.
By the end of the celebrations, however, large numbers of participants were walking through the park on their way to public transport stations near Potsdamer Platz. Investigators believe the suspect may have deliberately targeted this less-protected route.
The van eventually crashed into a tree. According to Germany’s Interior Ministry, the suspect then allegedly continued the attack on pedestrians using a bladed weapon believed to have been a machete before being stopped.
Investigation Continues
German media reported that the suspect lived in Berlin with his mother and two sisters. He reportedly had no permanent job and occasionally worked as a security guard or driver.
According to his father, the suspect spent much of his time using his mobile phone or watching television and often slept until the afternoon. The father also recalled arguments over his son’s wish to grow a long beard.
Speaking after the attack, the suspect’s father said the family did not support the Islamic State group and claimed his son had been “brainwashed.” Authorities have not yet announced a final motive for the attack, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Germany Continues to Monitor Hundreds of Islamist Threats
According to documents presented to the German Bundestag, around 450 individuals were classified as Islamist “dangerous persons” (Gefährder) as of September 2025. German security services use this designation for individuals considered capable of committing serious politically motivated crimes, including terrorist attacks. Authorities continue to monitor these individuals closely as part of the country’s counterterrorism efforts.
