Premium Airline Demand Rises While Asia Leads Global Air Traffic, Says IATA

Demand for premium air travel continued to grow in 2025, while Asia reinforced its position as the world’s busiest aviation region, according to the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) latest World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) 2025 report.

The annual report, based on operational data from 1,315 airlines, including more than 250 international carriers, highlights rising demand for business-class travel, the continued expansion of domestic aviation markets in Asia, and ongoing fleet modernization across the industry.

Premium Travel Continues to Expand

International airlines carried 109.7 million business- and first-class passengers in 2025, representing a 4.5% increase compared with 2024. Premium travelers accounted for 5.5% of all international passengers during the year.

Europe remained the largest premium travel market with 39.7 million business- and first-class passengers. Latin America recorded the strongest growth, with premium traffic rising 22.1% year-on-year to reach 4 million passengers.

Premium cabins represented 10.4% of passengers in North America and 9.5% in the Middle East, reflecting continued demand for higher-value travel products.

Asia Remains the World’s Busiest Aviation Region

The Asia-Pacific region continued to dominate global air traffic, with the world’s busiest airline route remaining the domestic connection between Jeju and Seoul Gimpo in South Korea, which carried 13.3 million passengers in 2025.

Other high-traffic routes highlighted in the report include:

  • North America: New York–Los Angeles (2.2 million passengers).
  • Top international route: New York–London (2.1 million passengers).
  • Latin America: Bogotá–Medellín (3.5 million passengers).
  • Africa: Cape Town–Johannesburg (3.4 million passengers).
  • Europe: Barcelona–Palma de Mallorca (2.1 million passengers), while Stockholm–Malmö recorded an 85% increase in passenger traffic.

United States and China Lead Global Markets

The United States remained the world’s largest aviation market with 890.1 million passengers in 2025. However, among the world’s ten largest aviation markets, it posted the slowest annual growth, with passenger numbers increasing by just 1.6% compared with 2024.

China ranked second with 776.1 million passengers, recording annual growth of 4.8%.

Some of the fastest-growing aviation markets were found in Central Asia and Southeast Asia. Kazakhstan’s passenger traffic increased 40% to 18.1 million travelers, Uzbekistan grew 16.9% to 12.5 million, and Vietnam recorded a 14.8% increase to 80.9 million passengers.

Airlines Continue Fleet Modernization

Airlines continued replacing older aircraft with more fuel-efficient models as global travel demand recovered.

Compared with pre-pandemic 2019 levels, flights operated by the Airbus A350 increased by 117.4%, while Boeing 787 services rose 40.8%.

Meanwhile, Airbus A380 operations remained below pre-pandemic levels, declining by 24.4%. The trend reflects the industry’s continued shift toward more fuel-efficient twin-engine widebody aircraft that offer lower operating costs and reduced emissions.

The findings underscore the aviation sector’s continued recovery, with premium travel, expanding Asian markets, and next-generation aircraft shaping the industry’s growth trajectory.
