Madrid has opened a free summer hotel for houseplants, offering residents a safe place to leave their indoor plants while they are away on holiday. The initiative proved so popular that all available spaces were filled shortly after opening, forcing organisers to temporarily suspend new admissions.
The plant hotel operates at the Infinito Delicias community centre and was created for people who have no one available to water their plants during the summer holiday season. The service is particularly valuable during Madrid’s hot summers, when high temperatures can quickly dry out potting soil and damage indoor plants.
Free Care Throughout the Summer
Plants stay in a cool indoor environment where they are looked after by the centre’s staff. The service is completely free of charge. Owners are simply asked to bring each plant together with its drainage tray to prevent water from affecting neighbouring pots.
Residents can drop off or collect their plants on Wednesdays between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., when staff are available to receive the plants, organise returns and answer questions about plant care.
The initiative is expected to continue throughout the summer whenever space becomes available. Plants must be collected no later than 12 September. However, organisers have already stopped accepting new arrivals after the first wave of registrations filled all available places.
Plant Care Workshops
On opening day, the centre also hosted a practical workshop explaining how to care for different types of plants during periods of extreme heat. Similar advice sessions will continue every Wednesday during plant drop-off and collection hours.
Part of a Community Climate Refuge
Infinito Delicias is not a flower shop or commercial service. Opened in late 2025, the community centre combines culture, contemporary art, environmental initiatives, urban agriculture and experimental gastronomy.
During the summer, the centre also serves as a free climate refuge where residents can escape the heat, read, work or simply relax in a cool environment. The plant hotel forms part of this wider programme, helping both people and their houseplants cope with Madrid’s increasingly hot summers.
The building itself received the European Gold Holcim Awards in 2023 for sustainable architecture. It includes 160 square metres of indoor gardens and urban growing spaces, giving the centre’s team extensive experience in caring for plants.
