UK Staycation Searches Jump 11% As Brits Choose Rural Escapes And Short-Haul Travel

British holiday habits are shifting again for summer 2026, with new Airbnb data showing travelers increasingly choosing domestic breaks, countryside escapes and shorter international journeys instead of long-haul holidays.

The figures suggest convenience, affordability and flexibility are becoming increasingly important as travelers rethink how and where they spend their summer vacations.

The result is a summer travel market increasingly focused on rural Britain and nearby European destinations.

UK Staycations Continue Growing As Rural Destinations Lead Demand

Searches among UK travelers for domestic destinations increased by more than 11% year over year, highlighting continued strength in the staycation market.

Much of this demand is being driven by countryside destinations and regions located near national parks, reflecting growing interest in slower and more nature-focused travel.

Herefordshire recorded the strongest increase among rural destinations, with searches rising 76% compared with summer 2025.

Other fast-growing rural destinations included Staffordshire (+50%), Worcestershire (+48%), Forest of Dean (+34%) and Shropshire (+32%).

Travelers Choose Cheaper Alternatives Outside Major Cities

Another emerging trend is growing demand for destinations located near large cities rather than directly inside them.

These so-called city-fringe destinations allow visitors access to concerts, sporting events and cultural attractions while avoiding higher accommodation costs.

Richmond upon Thames recorded the largest increase with search growth reaching 140%, followed by Milton Keynes (+96%), Stirling (+79%), Harrow (+78%) and Stretford (+77%).

The data suggests travelers increasingly want proximity to events without paying premium city-center prices.

European Short-Haul Travel Dominates International Demand

For travelers leaving Britain, short-haul Europe is dominating demand.

All ten of Airbnb’s fastest-growing international destinations for British travelers are located within Europe, while the average international booking distance sits at only 317 miles from home.

This is substantially lower than the broader European average travel distance of 419 miles.

Among the fastest-growing destinations, Croatia’s Novalja recorded exceptional growth of 273%, while Albania’s coastal destination Himarë increased by 92%.

Outdoor-focused destinations are also seeing strong demand, including Portimão in Portugal (+173%), Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy (+115%) and Estepona in Spain (+105%).

Britain’s Most Popular Summer Destinations Continue Changing

Among domestic destinations, Carlisle, Halton, Richmond upon Thames, Milton Keynes and Stirling emerged among the most searched locations.

Internationally, British travelers increasingly searched for destinations including Como, Altea, Novalja, Bordeaux, Lagos, Portimão, Cortina d’Ampezzo and Monopoli.

The figures suggest British travel demand is not weakening but evolving, with travelers increasingly prioritizing accessibility, affordability and experiences closer to home.
