Sabalenka Cruises Through Roland Garros Opener While Jovic Impresses In Paris

World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka opened her Roland Garros campaign with a confident straight-sets victory on Tuesday, while rising American teenager Iva Jovic delivered one of the standout performances of the opening round in Paris.

Both players advanced to the second round with impressive displays on the clay courts of the French Open.

Sabalenka Continues Strong Grand Slam Form

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka defeated Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4, 6-2 on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The Belarusian produced an aggressive and composed performance, striking 29 winners as she controlled the match from the baseline.

Sabalenka has now avoided a first-round Grand Slam defeat since the 2020 Australian Open, underlining her consistency at major tournaments.

After reaching the Roland Garros final in 2025, the world No.1 arrived in Paris following a reduced clay-court schedule designed to prioritise recovery and freshness ahead of the tournament.

The strategy appeared effective as Sabalenka moved efficiently through the opening round with minimal difficulty.

She will next face either French wildcard Elsa Jacquemot or qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova in the second round.

Iva Jovic Announces Herself In Paris

Eighteen-year-old Iva Jovic also made a strong impression at Roland Garros, defeating Alexandra Eala 6-4, 6-2.

Eala pushed hard during the opening set and briefly threatened to seize momentum, but Jovic responded confidently under pressure before taking control of the match.

The second set showcased the teenager’s composure and clean ball striking as she closed out victory in one hour and 40 minutes.

The result sends Jovic into the second round of Roland Garros for the first time and continues her rapid rise on the professional tour.

Emma Navarro Clash Looms

Jovic now faces a significantly tougher challenge against Emma Navarro in what could become one of the most intriguing second-round matches of the tournament.

If the American teenager maintains the level she displayed against Eala, the upcoming clash is expected to attract significant attention in Paris.

The performances from both Sabalenka and Jovic added further excitement to the opening days of Roland Garros as the tournament’s women’s draw continues to take shape.
