Emirates has expanded its global “Travel Rehearsal” programme to Madagascar, introducing the autism-friendly initiative at Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo for the first time.
The programme is designed to help neurodivergent passengers and travellers with accessible travel requirements become familiar with airport procedures and aircraft environments before taking an actual flight.
First Autism-Friendly Travel Rehearsal Held In Madagascar
The first session in Madagascar was organised in partnership with Ivato International Airport and local educational organisations, including Zaz Heureux School.
Ten children with autism and their families participated in the guided travel simulation alongside Emirates and airport staff.
The experience included check-in procedures, security screening, departure lounge access, immigration formalities, luggage collection and arrival meet-and-greet services.
Specially arranged airport officers and airline representatives were available throughout the rehearsal to answer questions and support families.
Aircraft Experience Designed To Reduce Travel Anxiety
One of the central elements of the programme was a guided onboard tour of an Emirates aircraft.
Participants were able to explore the cabin environment and familiarise themselves with the onboard experience in a calm and structured setting.
Emirates said the initiative aims to reduce anxiety, improve predictability and build confidence among neurodivergent travellers before future journeys.
Emirates Continues Accessible Travel Expansion
Emirates became the world’s first Autism-Certified Airline after more than 35,000 cabin crew and ground staff completed specialised autism awareness training.
The training programme focuses on understanding autism spectrum conditions, travel-related challenges and personalised support strategies for passengers.
According to the airline, the “Accessible Travel for All” initiative forms part of a broader effort to make air travel more inclusive and accessible worldwide.
Global Programme Continues Across Multiple Regions
Since April 2025, Emirates has organised around 40 travel rehearsal sessions across airports in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Americas.
The programme has already been introduced in destinations including Athens, Barcelona, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Sydney, Toronto, Rome and Stockholm.
The expansion into Madagascar reflects growing international attention on accessible tourism and the aviation industry’s increasing focus on inclusive travel experiences for passengers with neurodivergent conditions and sensory sensitivities.
