Catalunya Tourism Model Faces Drain Claim In New Report

Catalunya’s tourism model is facing growing criticism after a new report warned that record visitor numbers are placing mounting pressure on housing, water resources, infrastructure, and local communities across the region.

The report comes as Catalunya welcomed more than 18 million international tourists in 2025, with tourism contributing around 12 per cent of regional GDP while intensifying concerns over overtourism and sustainability.

Tourism Growth Drives Economic Gains And Local Pressure

The report said tourism remains one of Catalunya’s most important economic sectors, supporting thousands of jobs across hospitality, aviation, transport, retail, and cruise industries.

However, researchers warned that the rapid growth in visitor numbers is increasingly straining public infrastructure, natural resources, and urban services, particularly during peak summer periods.

Barcelona Remains At Centre Of Overtourism Debate

Barcelona continued attracting the highest concentration of visitors, recording more than 12 million overnight tourists during the year.

The report said rising demand for short-term tourist accommodation has contributed to increasing rents and property prices across several districts, adding pressure to an already difficult housing market for residents.

Water Consumption And Infrastructure Concerns Grow

Researchers also highlighted concerns over water usage and environmental sustainability, particularly as parts of Catalunya continue dealing with drought conditions and climate-related pressures.

Some municipalities reported significant increases in water consumption during peak tourism months, while transport systems and public services experienced growing seasonal congestion.

Resident Frustration Continues To Rise

The report noted growing public frustration over overcrowding, rising living costs, and the expansion of tourist-focused developments in residential areas.

Anti-overtourism protests and demonstrations have continued across Barcelona and other popular destinations as local groups call for stricter controls on visitor growth and holiday rentals.

Calls For A More Sustainable Tourism Strategy

The report urged regional authorities to adopt a more sustainable tourism strategy focused on balancing economic growth with environmental protection and quality of life for residents.

Recommendations included tighter regulation of short-term rentals, investment in infrastructure, improved visitor management, and measures aimed at reducing pressure on heavily visited destinations.

European Destinations Face Similar Challenges

Catalunya joins a growing number of European tourism hotspots reassessing how to manage rising visitor numbers as international travel demand continues recovering strongly.

Several cities and regions across southern Europe have already introduced restrictions on cruise tourism, short-term rentals, and visitor capacity as governments respond to concerns over overtourism and sustainability.
