A British tourist has died after falling around 400 feet from a popular coastal viewing area in northern Spain, according to local reports.
The 38-year-old man was discovered on Friday morning along the Paseo Nuevo coastal walkway in San Sebastian after reportedly falling from the Mount Urgull area above.
Basque newspaper El Diario Vasco reported that a passer-by found the man at around 11am and alerted emergency services.
Despite the rapid response, the unnamed tourist was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency Crews Used Ladder Truck To Reach Body
Authorities reportedly deployed a ladder from a fire service vehicle in order to access the area where the man had fallen.
The incident happened near a large Basque flag overlooking the Salamanca promenade and Zuloaga square, one of the city’s most photographed scenic points.
The elevated viewpoint attracts both tourists and hikers because of its panoramic views over San Sebastian’s coastline and bay.
The nearby Paseo Nuevo coastal path is also popular with walkers and climbers exploring Mount Urgull and surrounding trails.
Beauty Spot Has Seen Previous Fatal Falls
This is not the first fatal accident reported at the location.
In 2019, a 65-year-old woman also died after falling from Mount Urgull in similar circumstances.
Local authorities have not yet confirmed the circumstances surrounding the latest incident or whether an investigation is ongoing.
Series Of Fatal Falls In Spain Involving British Tourists
The tragedy follows several other fatal falls involving British tourists in Spain in recent years.
In 2025, two Scottish tourists died in separate incidents at the Ibiza Rocks hotel. Evan Thomson, 26, and Gary Kelly, 19, both fell from hotel balconies in unrelated accidents.
Spanish tourist destinations continue to attract millions of British visitors every year, particularly during the busy summer season.
