Costa Blanca Luxury Watch Robbery Gang Arrested in Spain

Police in Spain have arrested four people suspected of stealing high-value watches from holidaymakers in a series of robberies that targeted some of the country’s best-known resort areas.

The group was linked to thefts in Benidorm, Madrid and Puerto Banus, according to authorities. Officers said the suspects used violence and intimidation to steal luxury watches, often from tourists in busy public areas.

Police said the arrests took place in the Costa Blanca after a series of investigations into the crimes. The operation focused on a gang that authorities believe moved between popular destinations to target visitors carrying expensive timepieces.

The case highlights a long-running problem in parts of Spain’s tourism industry, where luxury watches have become a prized target for organised thieves. Holidaymakers in resort towns and city centres are often singled out because they may be distracted, unfamiliar with the area or carrying valuables that are easy to resell.

Authorities said the suspects were detained after investigators gathered evidence connecting them to multiple incidents. Police did not immediately give details of the specific locations of the arrests, but said the operation was carried out in the Costa Blanca holiday region, which attracts large numbers of domestic and international visitors each year.

Benidorm, Madrid and Puerto Banus are among Spain’s most visited and recognisable destinations, making them attractive to criminals who can blend into crowds. Watch thefts in such places can happen quickly, with thieves often using distraction, sudden force or coordinated tactics to snatch items before escaping.

Luxury watches have become a major focus for thieves in Europe because some models can be sold on for large sums on the black market. Their small size, high value and strong international demand make them easier to move than other stolen goods.

Spanish police have repeatedly warned visitors to keep valuables out of sight and to remain alert in crowded areas, transport hubs and nightlife districts. Tourists are often advised to avoid flashing expensive jewellery or watches in public and to stay aware of anyone approaching them too closely.

The arrests come as Spain continues to record heavy visitor numbers across its beach resorts and major cities. While most trips pass without incident, theft and robbery remain a concern for local authorities in the country’s most popular tourist spots.

Police have not said whether any of the stolen watches have been recovered. Investigations into the wider network and the possible resale of the items are expected to continue.
