Ryanair has announced a key operational change that will affect millions of passengers across its network, extending airport check-in and baggage drop deadlines from 40 minutes to 60 minutes before departure.
The new rule will come into effect from November 10 and applies across all airports served by the airline. The move is designed to give passengers more time to clear increasingly busy security and passport control queues, reducing the number of travellers who miss flights despite arriving at the airport.
According to Ryanair, the adjustment specifically targets passengers travelling with checked baggage, who are most exposed to delays in airport processing.
The change comes alongside a wider rollout of self-service technology. From October, the airline expects self-service baggage drop kiosks to be available at more than 95% of the airports it operates from. These kiosks will be fully integrated with the Ryanair mobile app, allowing passengers to check in luggage and print bag tags independently.
The goal is to streamline the airport experience, cutting waiting times at traditional check-in desks and speeding up the overall baggage drop process.
For the majority of travellers, however, nothing will change. Around 80% of Ryanair passengers already travel without checked luggage and check in online before arriving at the airport. These passengers will continue to proceed directly to security and boarding gates as usual.
The update reflects a broader trend across the aviation industry, where airlines are increasingly shifting toward self-service and digital-first processes to manage growing passenger volumes and reduce operational bottlenecks.
By extending deadlines while simultaneously automating check-in, Ryanair is attempting to balance efficiency with reliability – giving passengers more buffer time without slowing down the system.
For travellers, the message is clear: if you’re checking a bag, arrive earlier. The low-cost model still depends on strict timing, but now with slightly more breathing room built in.
