Iranian drones struck another airport, now Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave, damaging the passenger terminal of Nakhchivan International Airport and landing near a school close to the Iranian border, according to Azerbaijani authorities.
Officials said at least two civilians were injured in the attacks, which targeted infrastructure in the autonomous region that lies between Armenia, Iran and Turkey. The incident has triggered a diplomatic response from Baku, which summoned Iran’s ambassador and demanded an explanation.
According to an official statement, one drone hit the passenger terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, causing structural damage. Another drone fell near a school in the village of Shakarabad, raising fears of further civilian casualties in the border area.
“We strongly condemn these drone attacks launched from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which resulted in damage to the airport building and injuries of two civilians,” Azerbaijani authorities said in the statement.
Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry confirmed that Iran’s ambassador in Baku had been summoned in response to the incident. Officials said the government has formally requested an explanation from Tehran “within the shortest possible timeframe.”
Baku also demanded assurances that similar attacks will not occur again, warning that strikes against civilian infrastructure represent a serious escalation along the sensitive frontier between the two countries.
Nakhchivan is a strategically important Azerbaijani exclave separated from the rest of the country by Armenian territory but bordering Iran along its southern frontier. The region hosts key transportation infrastructure, including the airport and major road links connecting Azerbaijan with Turkey.
