Dubai to Roll Out Citywide Contactless Hotel Check-In Using Biometric Technology

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has announced the citywide introduction of a one-time, contactless hotel check-in solution that will allow visitors to bypass traditional front-desk procedures across Dubai’s hotels and holiday homes.

The initiative sets a new global benchmark for convenience, safety, and innovation in hospitality, reinforcing Dubai’s ambition to remain at the forefront of smart tourism. Once implemented, guests will be able to complete check-in formalities digitally before arrival, eliminating the need for in-person document verification at the start of each stay.

The new system supports the objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to further consolidate Dubai’s position as a leading global destination for business and leisure through digital transformation and smart city initiatives.

Developed by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, the biometric and digital check-in capability is available through several independent technology providers and can now be integrated by hotels and holiday homes across the city. Its rollout underscores Dubai’s continued focus on enhancing the visitor experience while driving operational efficiency across the hospitality sector.

Guests using the system can upload their identification documents and biometric data securely from their mobile phones prior to arrival. Once completed, the data remains valid until the identification document expires, allowing repeat visitors to authenticate future stays with a quick biometric confirmation, such as facial recognition. This is particularly significant for Dubai, where repeat travellers account for nearly a quarter of annual visitation.

Speaking on the announcement, Sheikh Hamdan said the initiative reflects Dubai’s broader vision for innovation-led growth. Guided by the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai continues to prioritise seamless, secure, and future-ready urban experiences. He noted that the technology not only enhances the visitor journey but also strategically positions the city for sustained tourism growth in line with D33.

Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, described the rollout as a pivotal moment for the hospitality industry. He highlighted the role of collaboration between public and private sectors in delivering tangible benefits for visitors and industry stakeholders, while supporting the continued expansion of Dubai’s tourism ecosystem.

Designed for easy integration into existing hotel apps and web platforms, the solution minimises disruption for participating properties. Looking ahead, the technology also has potential applications beyond accommodation, including car rentals and other tourism services, enabling a more connected and personalised visitor journey across the city.

The initiative builds on Dubai’s broader adoption of smart technologies, including biometric smart tunnels at Dubai International Airport, which have already reduced passport control processing times to just seconds.

Dubai’s hospitality sector remains a key pillar of its global appeal, supported by 820 hotels and hotel apartments across the emirate. In the first ten months of 2025, the city welcomed 15.70 million international overnight visitors, a 5 percent increase year-on-year, with guests generating 36.71 million hotel room nights, underlining the scale and momentum of the destination’s continued growth.
