European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has announced an updated version of its A220 narrowbody jet, set to feature the company’s signature Airspace cabin and an increase in seating capacity. Deliveries of the revamped aircraft are scheduled to begin in 2026, with certification of the higher-capacity version expected by 2027.
Cabin Upgrades with Airspace Design
The refreshed A220 will debut with Airspace XL overhead bins, offering 15% more storage capacity compared to current designs. Despite their larger size, the bins are 20% lighter and equipped with simpler mechanisms, reducing both aircraft weight and airline maintenance costs.
Another highlight of the new interior is an advanced LED lighting system capable of displaying up to 16 million colors. This flexibility allows airlines to customize the cabin in their brand palette or simulate natural lighting transitions throughout the flight, from sunrise to sunset, enhancing passenger comfort.
Increased Capacity for Airlines
Airbus has also reconfigured the A220-300 layout to accommodate up to 160 passengers, an increase of 10 seats. The additional capacity could boost airline revenues by up to 7% on busy routes—a meaningful figure in an industry where profit margins are typically slim.
The move mirrors similar optimizations Airbus has made to its best-selling A320 family. For example, reworking the A320 cabin allowed the maximum capacity to rise from 180 to 186 passengers, partly by redesigning the rear galley and relocating lavatories.
With its blend of improved passenger experience and operational efficiency, the updated A220 strengthens Airbus’s position in the competitive narrowbody market, appealing to carriers focused on both comfort and cost performance.
