Ever wondered what makes a holiday truly unforgettable? For many travelers, it’s not just the memories they make, but the souvenirs they bring home. According to a recent global poll conducted by Opodo, traditional keepsakes like fridge magnets and local crafts remain popular, but a surprising new trend is emerging: tattoos.
Opodo’s survey reveals that nearly half of travelers (41%) capture memories through photos or travel journals, while 35% still pick classic souvenirs such as magnets or artisan crafts. Food and drink are also favorites, with 31% of respondents bringing back local flavors. But increasingly, travelers are choosing more permanent ways to commemorate their trips — 4% of those surveyed admitted to getting a tattoo inspired by their travels.
Earlier this year, Kimpton Hotels & Resorts teamed up with Tiny Zaps, a tattoo studio known for its detailed, small-scale designs, to bring this “tattourism” movement directly to hotel guests across the United States.
“The best souvenirs tell a story,” notes Opodo. Instead of generic, mass-produced items, travelers are encouraged to choose keepsakes with meaning — whether it’s handcrafted pottery, culturally inspired jewelry, or local spices. Even a book discovered in a neighborhood shop can transport you back to your destination. Tattoos, in this context, are the ultimate personal memento, creating a permanent connection to a place and experience.
Opodo also shared tips for travelers seeking meaningful souvenirs:
Local crafts: Find handmade items that reflect the spirit of your destination. From pottery to woven textiles, these pieces carry a story you can’t get anywhere else.
Food and drink: Take a taste of your travels home. Spices, oils, chocolates, or other artisanal treats make memorable gifts and conversation starters.
Books: A local book can be a gateway back to your trip every time you read it.
Tattoos: For those seeking a permanent reminder, tattoos offer a unique and personal way to honor a journey.
Whether it’s a handcrafted item, a bottle of local olive oil, or a travel-inspired tattoo, the best souvenirs are those that carry the spirit of your trip and the memories you cherish. Opodo’s survey shows that while classic souvenirs remain popular, travelers are increasingly embracing creative and lasting ways to bring their holidays home.
