The Michelin Guide is set to launch its first Wellness Award on 8 October during a ceremony at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The new accolade will honor hotels that place physical and mental wellbeing at the core of their guest experience.
Five properties have been shortlisted by Michelin inspectors: Canyon Ranch in Arizona, Joali Being in the Maldives, Lily of the Valley in France, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon in Iceland, and Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland.
While each offers world-class spas and fitness facilities, Michelin emphasizes that their commitment to wellness goes deeper. These retreats immerse guests in bespoke programs, expert-led activities, and restorative environments designed to provide a complete lifestyle reset.
The winning property will receive a Michelin Key—the hospitality equivalent of a Michelin Star—first introduced in 2024 across North America, Europe, and Asia. Keys are awarded at one-, two- and three-key levels to hotels representing the finest in design, service, and guest experience.
Liz Terry, editorial director of Spa Business, welcomed the move:
“Although Michelin is late to the party with a wellness award, the weight of its brand will make these titles highly sought after.” She also called for more transparency in Michelin’s criteria to guide operators competing for the new accolade.
The Wellness Award is one of four new distinctions being introduced this year. Others include:
Architecture and Design Award – for hotels with outstanding design;
Local Gateway Award – for properties that deliver authentic local experiences;
Opening of the Year Award – for standout new hotels.
With wellness tourism continuing to expand, Michelin’s entry into the space signals a new era where hotel experiences are judged not only by luxury and service, but also by their ability to rejuvenate body and mind.
