A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake has struck Afghanistan, killing more than 600 people. Rescue operations are ongoing, and officials warn that the death toll could rise.
The earthquake’s epicenter was just 8 km deep, making it a shallow quake — the type most likely to cause severe destruction. A 4.8 magnitude aftershock followed the initial tremor. Reports indicate that several villages have been destroyed.
This tragedy comes two years after a deadly 2023 earthquake in Afghanistan that claimed over 1,000 lives.

The epicenter was near the town of Sindirgi, and tremors were felt as far away as Istanbul. The earthquake caused the collapse of 16 buildings, including two mosque minarets, and resulted in one death and 29 injuries. Rescue teams have been deployed to search for survivors amid the rubble.
