Iceland Eruption Prompts Evacuations Near Blue Lagoon as Lava Fissure Opens on Reykjanes Peninsula

A fresh volcanic eruption has shaken Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, marking the twelfth such event in the region since 2021. The eruption, which began with magma breaking through the Earth’s crust and forming a fissure estimated to be between 700 and 1,000 meters long, prompted swift evacuations of tourists and locals alike — including guests at the luxury Blue Lagoon geothermal spa resort.

Columns of smoke and fountains of lava were visible on live video feeds, offering a dramatic display of nature’s power. The Icelandic Meteorological Office confirmed the eruption’s location and scale, as emergency services worked quickly to clear nearby areas as a precaution. Among those evacuated were visitors staying at the Blue Lagoon’s five-star hotel complex, as well as tourists at a nearby campsite.

Authorities also re-evacuated the town of Grindavík, which has remained largely empty since nearly 4,000 residents were forced to leave in 2023 due to continued volcanic threats. Despite the intense volcanic activity, flights at Reykjavik’s nearby Keflavik International Airport have not been disrupted, according to local officials.

Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, located just a short drive from the capital, has become a hotbed of geological activity in recent years, drawing global attention with its frequent eruptions and otherworldly lava landscapes. While eruptions in the area rarely pose direct danger to travelers thanks to swift responses and monitoring systems, they remain a stark reminder of the country’s volatile volcanic underbelly.

For now, travelers are urged to follow safety advisories and avoid closed areas while Iceland’s emergency and scientific teams continue to monitor the situation.
