FlixBus has officially launched its first domestic routes within Romania, marking a major milestone in the company’s expansion across Central and Eastern Europe. The move brings 10 new intercounty lines, connecting over 50 cities across the country in partnership with local transport providers.
The newly introduced network features high-demand routes such as Bucharest–Iași and Constanța–Timișoara, along with connections to key regional hubs including Satu Mare, creating a seamless and affordable mobility solution for Romanian passengers.
“Expanding the network internally is a natural step toward offering a fully integrated mobility solution for Romanian passengers,” said Adrian Rășoiu, Business Development Director at FlixBus Romania.
The launch comes at a pivotal time as Romania liberalizes its intercounty transport sector, aligning with the European mobility model already adopted by countries such as Germany, France, Italy, and most recently, Portugal.
“FlixBus’s expansion into the domestic transport market is an important step that diversifies mobility options for citizens,” stated Gabriel-Bogdan Ștețco, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism. “This directly supports the growth of internal and regional tourism, making it easier to access tourist destinations across the country and boosting the local economy.”
According to official statistics, demand for coach travel continues to grow. Tudorel Andrei, President of the National Institute of Statistics, confirmed that coach travel remains one of the top three modes of transport among international visitors, with nearly 37,000 foreign tourists traveling by coach within Romania in 2024 alone. Spending on such transport services increased by over 15% year-on-year.
FlixBus has been active in Romania since 2018, offering international coach connections to over 160 destinations across Europe. With the new domestic services, FlixBus now connects more than 80 Romanian cities, providing travelers with a modern, sustainable, and cost-effective alternative to traditional intercity travel.
The announcement follows closely on the heels of Bucharest’s plan to restart its double-decker tourist bus service and reflects broader national efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure and connectivity.
As Romania embraces European mobility standards, FlixBus’s expansion promises to reshape domestic travel, offering greater access, convenience, and eco-conscious transportation for both residents and tourists.
