Nuuk Airport has officially lifted restrictions on which airlines can operate flights to the Greenlandic capital, welcoming all carriers just months after its historic opening in November 2024. Initially, only Air Greenland and Icelandair were permitted to land at the new airport under conditions set by the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority. However, Greenland Airports, the operator of Nuuk Airport, confirmed this week that these restrictions have now been removed.
The opening of Nuuk’s new airport marked a major milestone for Greenland’s aviation sector. Before its construction, passengers had to fly into smaller cities such as Kangerlussuaq or Narsarsuaq, both former World War II bases capable of handling larger aircraft. Now, with a 2,200-metre runway and an Instrument Landing System (ILS) to ensure safe landings even in challenging Arctic conditions, Nuuk is better positioned as a key gateway for international travel.
In a statement, Greenland Airports said, “The new airport in Nuuk has created renewed and greater demand for travel to Greenland, and therefore, it is also an important step that the airport is now approved to receive all airlines that wish to use our fantastic country as a destination.”
With Greenland anticipating a strong tourism season, passengers will now be able to fly directly to Nuuk from countries such as Denmark, Canada, Iceland, and the United States. Alongside Air Greenland and Icelandair, new carriers including Air Seven, SAS, and United Airlines are set to begin operations at the airport.
