Alexandria Introduces Visa-Free Access for Citizens of 115 Countries

As of October 2024, citizens from 115 countries can now visit Alexandria without the need for a visa, offering them an easy and hassle-free way to experience the city’s rich cultural heritage, Mediterranean charm, and vibrant atmosphere. This development is expected to further elevate Alexandria’s status as a prime travel destination, making it even more accessible to global tourists eager to explore its historical treasures and stunning coastline.

Record-Breaking Tax Revenues and Visitor Spending in Fiscal Year 2024

Alexandria’s tourism sector has seen substantial growth in recent years. In the fiscal year 2024, which ended on June 30, the city achieved a historic milestone with total sales, restaurant, and lodging tax revenues reaching $86 million. This figure marks a significant recovery from the pandemic-induced downturn, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. By comparison, the combined tax revenues were $76 million in fiscal year 2022 and rose to $81 million in fiscal year 2023.

Visitor spending has also soared. According to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Economic Impact of Domestic Travel report, travelers who ventured more than 50 miles to visit Alexandria spent a record-breaking $941 million in 2023. This surpasses the 2019 peak of $867 million, demonstrating a robust recovery after the sharp decline to $445 million in 2020 due to the pandemic. The upward trend began in 2021 with $613 million in visitor spending and continued in 2022, reaching $801 million.

Citizens from countries such as France, Germany, Japan, the United States, Australia, South Korea, Brazil, and many more are now able to visit Alexandria without a visa, greatly expanding the city’s reach in the global tourism market.
