Portland International Airport (PDX) has officially opened the first phase of its highly anticipated new main terminal. The $2.15 billion project is set to transform the travel experience for millions of passengers passing through the airport each year.
The newly unveiled section features a range of upgrades, including modernized check-in areas and expanded TSA security screening zones equipped with the latest technology. Wider spaces for smoother flow and bigger public areas have been integrated into the design. One standout feature is a pre-security area featuring stadium seating, offering travelers a comfortable spot to relax before heading to their gates.
In addition to the infrastructure improvements, 11 new shops and restaurants have opened in the terminal, all showcasing local Portland brands. Another three local establishments are set to open this fall, adding to the unique culinary and retail experience at PDX.
Designed by the architectural firm ZGF, the terminal draws inspiration from the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The building’s stunning timber roof, constructed using materials sourced from local and regional wood producers, is highlighted by 49 skylights that flood the space with natural light. The terminal is also home to over 5,000 living plants, including full-sized trees, creating a serene environment reminiscent of a walk through a Pacific Northwest forest.
Sharron van der Meulen, managing partner at ZGF, emphasized the terminal’s focus on enhancing the traveler experience. “Travelers are immediately greeted with expansive views of the airfield, abundant natural light, and lush interior landscapes that create a sense of wonder and delight,” she said. “The design evokes a walk through a Pacific Northwest forest, aiming to reduce the stress of travel.”
Construction of the million-square-foot terminal began in 2021, and 600,000 square feet of the facility is now open to the public. The final phase of the project is slated for completion in early 2026. Once finished, the terminal will feature 10 additional restaurants and shops, new airline lounges, waiting areas for arriving passengers, and upgraded escalators, elevators, and restrooms.
This latest development at Portland International Airport comes after a series of expansions and upgrades. Since 2020, the airport has expanded its Concourse E, opened a new Concourse B, and launched a state-of-the-art rental car center.
With its blend of modern amenities and nature-inspired design, the new terminal at PDX is set to redefine air travel in the Pacific Northwest.
