Europe Is on Fire: Heatwave and Drought Fuel Wildfires

A large part of Europe is engulfed in flames. High temperatures, strong winds, and a prolonged drought have led to large-scale wildfires that threaten human lives and natural ecosystems. These catastrophic events are occurring just as millions of Europeans and tourists from around the world are planning their vacations in popular resort countries such as Greece, Spain, and Croatia.

According to the European Forest Fire Information System, the risk of new fires in Southern Europe remains extremely high. Spain has become one of the most affected regions. The state meteorological service AEMET has forecast temperatures up to 44 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country. This heat, according to meteorologists, has been a record for the last decade. The Spanish Ministry of the Interior has declared a state of extreme fire danger throughout the country.

In Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, the Barcelona-Fabra Observatory recorded a new temperature record of 40 degrees Celsius. The previous record was set in 1982.

The situation is also complicated in Croatia, where firefighters have been battling fires for several days. The most difficult fires were recorded near the coastal town of Tučepi. In North Macedonia, the situation is no less critical: over 60 new fires broke out in a day.
