In a significant move to enhance its fleet, Polish railway operator PKP Intercity has signed a contract with manufacturer H. Cegielski – Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych from Poznan, which won the tender this spring to supply 300 locomotive-hauled passenger coaches. An additional 150 coaches can be ordered under an option clause in the contract.
Under the firm order, the carrier will acquire 198 second-class coaches, 38 first-class coaches, 38 dining cars, and 26 sleeper cars. The total cost of this purchase amounts to PLN 4.23 billion (€1 billion). If the option is exercised, it will add PLN 2.12 billion (€505 million) to the contract’s value. The first deliveries of the new coaches are scheduled to begin in early 2026, with the final coach expected to be delivered by 2030.
These trains will operate between Poland’s major cities, including Warsaw, Poznan, Krakow, Szczecin, Wroclaw, and Gdynia. Additionally, there are plans for international service on routes such as Warsaw – Berlin and Gdynia – Prague.
This procurement is a part of PKP Intercity’s broader strategy to modernize its fleet and improve the travel experience for passengers both domestically and internationally. The new coaches are expected to offer enhanced comfort and amenities, aligning with contemporary standards and passenger expectations.
