Greece Imposes Cruise Ship Restrictions on Santorini and Mykonos

Santorini and Mykonos, two of Greece’s most popular islands, are struggling to handle the influx of cruise tourists. Following in the footsteps of other destinations suffering from overtourism, such as Barcelona and Amsterdam, Greece has decided to implement restrictions on the number of cruise ships allowed to visit its most popular islands.

According to the Hellenic Ports Association, Santorini, renowned for its stunning volcanic landscapes and picturesque sunsets, was the most popular Greek island destination for cruise ships last year. The island welcomed 800 vessels, bringing nearly 1.3 million visitors—a 17% increase compared to 2022. This surge in tourism is significant for an island with a permanent population of only about 15,000 residents.

Other Greek islands are also feeling the strain. In 2023, Mykonos, known for its vibrant nightlife, was visited by 749 cruise ships, making it the second most visited after Santorini. This represents a 23% increase compared to 2022.

The Greek government’s decision to limit the number of cruise ships is aimed at preserving the quality of life for residents and maintaining the natural and cultural integrity of these islands. This measure is part of a broader effort to balance tourism and sustainability, ensuring that these iconic destinations can continue to thrive without being overwhelmed by visitors.
