Almost 200 tourists from Germany found themselves trapped in a sweltering plane with temperatures soaring above 50 degrees Celsius. The flight from Antalya to Münster was operated by Mavi Gök Airlines, reports Bild.
A total of 189 passengers were effectively caught in a heat trap when the air conditioning system of the Boeing 737-800 failed before takeoff. The incident, which occurred on June 6, has only now come to light.
“When we boarded, we immediately noticed it was hot inside the plane. The air conditioning was broken, and the plane sat on the tarmac in the heat for nearly an hour. The thermometer reached a shocking 52 degrees,” recounted passenger Dominik Jansen. According to him, the situation was especially tough on small children. Jansen’s wife, Nancy, tried to fan their child, but it was of little help.
“The children were getting louder and louder, all of them crying. The situation was very dangerous. Everyone was terrified for their children, panic spread among us,” added Nancy Jansen.
A Turkish-speaking doctor among the passengers approached the crew, warning that the children were in real danger if the air conditioning did not start working. Despite this, the pilot initially proceeded to taxi towards the runway but eventually decided to turn back and returned to the airport terminal.
“The airline offered us no assistance—no food, no water, nothing at all,” reported another passenger.
Ultimately, the passengers were able to depart after a four-hour delay.
