On Wednesday afternoon, a passenger Embraer E190 was preparing for departure from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport when a person was sucked into the aircraft’s engine. The Dutch airline KLM Cityhopper was scheduled to operate flight KL1341 to Billund, Denmark.
The engine was already running when the individual ended up on the turbine blades. At that moment, over eighty people were on board. Eyewitnesses reported a “hellish noise,” followed by smoke billowing from the engine.
Dutch police, responsible for security at the country’s largest airport, stated that passengers were immediately evacuated from the aircraft. Fire engines and several ambulances surrounded the plane.
It is not yet clear whether the victim was a passenger or a crew member. The circumstances of the incident remain uncertain, with suicide being one of the possible explanations. An investigation has been launched.
