According to statistics, over a third of tourists have booked a trip to a destination after reading about it or seeing it in a movie or TV series at least once in their lives. Travel surges to certain countries have occurred after the release of shows like Game of Thrones, Vikings, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, and many others. Now it’s time for another hit Netflix series – Ripley.
On April 4, 2024, one of the largest streaming platforms released the black-and-white miniseries Ripley, a psychological thriller starring Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning, based on the series of novels by American writer Patricia Highsmith. Although the original 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley had Tom Ripley living in the fictional Mongibello, the creators of the new series decided to relocate the events to the real town of Atrani, located near Naples.
The creators of Ripley closed the center of Atrani for a month in October 2021 to return it to the early 1960s, compensating local businesses for the inconvenience. Later in the Netflix series, Ripley’s misdeeds lead him to Naples, Rome, Palermo, and Venice. However, Rome and Venice are familiar with film crews and mass tourism. Atrani, with a permanent population of around 800 people, is preparing for changes.
