A small coastal town in northern Italy has changed its official name after struggling to attract tourists due to confusion caused by online search results.
Vallecrosia, located on the Mediterranean coast near the French border, has rebranded itself as Vallecrosia al Mare in an effort to clarify its identity as a seaside destination.
Search Confusion Kept Tourists Away
Despite its coastal location, the town has long received relatively few visitors. Local authorities identified the issue as a digital visibility problem linked to its name.
The word “valle” in Italian translates to “valley,” leading search engines to associate the destination with inland or mountainous areas rather than the coast. As a result, travellers searching for beach holidays were often directed to other locations.
Rebranding Strategy To Boost Tourism
Marketing research commissioned by the municipality concluded that a name change could significantly improve recognition and attract more tourists.
The addition of “al Mare,” meaning “by the sea,” aims to immediately communicate the town’s coastal identity and improve its visibility in online searches.
Officials hope the clearer positioning will help Vallecrosia compete more effectively with other Mediterranean destinations.
Minimal Impact For Residents
The renaming process is expected to have a limited administrative impact on residents.
Postal codes will remain unchanged, and official documents will be updated gradually as they expire, avoiding the need for immediate replacements.
Tourism Increasingly Driven By Digital Visibility
The move highlights the growing importance of search algorithms and online branding in tourism.
As travellers increasingly rely on digital platforms to plan trips, destinations are adapting their identities to ensure they are easily discoverable and accurately represented online.
For Vallecrosia al Mare, the rebrand is a strategic attempt to turn visibility into visitor growth, transforming a naming issue into an opportunity to reposition itself on the tourism map.
